I'm going to try and make this a short post for two reasons. First, the last few posts have been a little long and I know the average American doesn't like to read. Second, no one really deserved awards this week (except for the first recipient below). So, without any further adieu, let's reluctantly roll out some awards...
Surprise, surprise, this week's Beast Mode Award goes to Allen Robinson, who did just about everything right in a game where so much else went wrong. He had a league (and career) high 12 catches for 173 yds and 2 TDs. He also climbed to #7 on Penn State's career receptions list with 118 total catches, and rose to a tie with O.J. McDuffie at #5 on Penn State's career TD receptions list with 16 to date. Nuff said!
It was really difficult to find a person who played a new position well or totally transformed their game. So, for yet another week, the definition of this award is changing. This week's Transformer Award goes to do it all defensive back Adrian Amos who played well bouncing back and forth between safety and cornerback. Amos also pulled in an interception during the game. He's one of the best athletes on the team, and a key to keeping this secondary together against Michigan next week. He deserves some kind of recognition.
No one gets the Matrix Award this week because, quite frankly, no one deserved it. Nobody on the team (again, except for Robinson) stepped it up this week, let alone a freshman. Oh well, maybe next week.
I had to dig a little into the stats, but I think I found someone who had a decent day and got very little recognition. That's why this week the In Disguise Award goes to Kyle Carter. The tight end has had nagging injuries all season, but was seemingly back at 100% this week with 6 catches for 79 yds, including a long of 26. Robinson stole the show, but Carter stepped up big as a decent second option, especially with Felder out.
And finally, I wish I could give more than one of these out this week, but I have decided to give the Megatron Award to special teams mistakes. There were mistakes all over the field, but the biggest and most visible came on special teams. From the botched snap on the first field goal, to the blocked second field goal, and the fumble on a kickoff, special teams was just plain UGLY! If you want more elaboration, go read the grades from this week; I'm honestly tired of talking about it. Can't we just go back to the days when it was nice seeing Ficken come on to the field because you knew he was automatic?
Alright, all the posts are done. No more talking about this game. Let's regroup, fix the mistakes, and beat Michigan!!! And don't forget to follow me on Twitter @PSUOptimus throughout the week for the latest news and updates as the Nittany Lions prepare for what's shaping up to be an awesome Homecoming weekend!
